Joy As Rebellion
There is a lot going on right now in the world. Clients are talking to me a lot about FEAR and getting lost in the spiral-y thoughts of:
“What will happen!?”
“WHY is this happening!?”
“What's coming next?”
It can be absolutely panic-inducing.
And, you better believe I can get lost in it too.
The mind hates to not know and is incredibly creative, so when it's uncertain you may find yourself coming up with all kinds of stories about what could go wrong or what's going to fall apart.
This can create endless suffering (along with completely terrifying yourself), and before we know it, we're missing days and weeks lost in our own fear and not present to the good that is actually happening now.
So, if it feels like you're finding yourself in a worried or fear state there's a few things you can do right in this very moment to shift your energy….
1) First, acknowledge that there is paradox. We are always holding both: the light side, and the shadow side.
You’ve likely seen quotes about how there cannot be light without darkness, and that things grow from the dark and on and on. And, it’s true. Just as easy as it is for us to find everything that’s “going wrong” right now and set our minds in that direction, we can also keep watch for how much is “going right.”
Acknowledge the light-holders in your life. See the new support groups that have popped up to help people. Notice who is showing up to help. Notice those you love, what’s going WELL in your life, and the joyful moments of the day (even if they are just minutes).
2) Second, as humans we need to (as the powerful Taylor Swift says) SHAKE IT OFF.
Notice that when an animal gets hurt, or your dog runs its head into the couch, that it shakes off the trauma that just occurred. We, as humans, don’t shake it off. We don’t allow the energy to flow through us. Instead, we typically demand we remain still, quiet, and then wonder why we’re feeling so awful.
So, right now, I want you to stand up. For reals. Stand up, and shake it off…shake feet, legs, arms, hands, nod your head back and forth…let some of the negative energy release. Do it for at least 5 seconds.
3) Your joy is a form of resistance.
You opting to bring joy and light in your life says, “I will not allow you (person, fear, group of people) to have power over how I feel.” There is nothing more a bully would love than for you to stay silent, angry, and discontented because of their actions. Do not give them that privilege. You can opt for joy (even if it’s just little moments you reclaim).
I’ll say more on this later, but for now, try these things:
1) Notice the light side. Find evidence of the good that is happening in your personal life and in the greater world (because there is so much good).
2) Shake it off. Move the body. Let it flow. Cry. Feel.
3) Lean in the direction of joy.
